Abstract

This research dealt with an analysis of students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text and the factors that contribute and the students’ ability in writing a descriptive text. This study was descriptive quantitative. The population of this study was 300 students of the eighth grade of SMPN 5 Mataram and 10% or 30 students were taken as the sample. The research used random cluster sampling. The data of this study were collected through writing task to know the students’ difficulty and ability in writing descriptive text. The study also applied a questionnaire to strengthen the data collected from writing task. Based on the data, the students’ difficulty was analysed through five aspects: Content, Organization, Grammar, Vocabulary and Mechanics. The students mostly faced difficulties in term of grammar, especially in subject-verb agreements. Most of the students were unable to use the correct subject-verb agreements. There are some factors that contribute to students’ difficulties. Three factors were found and possible of affecting the students. They are Overgeneralization, Simplification and Language Transfer. From the result of writing task, it was found that 4 students (13.33%) were classified as Very Good, 8 students (26.67%) were classified as Good, 9 students (30%) were classified as Satisfactory and 6 students (20%) were categorized as Very Poor. At the end, students’ ability in writing descriptive text is categorized as Satisfactory. This can be concluded from the students’ average score which was 63.62.
