Abstract

This study aims to find what kinds of difficulties in mastering English vocabulary and to investigate the factors causing the difficulties in mastering English vocabulary. This design of this study was descriptive quantitative study and the data were collected through test and questionnaire. The subject of this study was second grade students of SMPN 1 KEDIRI which consist of 145 students and the sample was 37 students. The sample of the study was determined by using quota random sampling. The result showed that there were five kinds of difficulties in mastering English vocabulary: grammar, meaning, range, connotation and idiomaticity, appropriate use, and spelling. From the result, the research concluded that most of the students faced the difficulties in grammar, there were 67.0% of students failed to answer grammar questions. And the factors which influence students’ problem were: the availability of the dictionary in the library is not used by the students, the material was not memorized by the students, the material was not repeated after school, the vocabulary that is given by the teacher was not practiced by the students. And the teacher’s material was not understood by the students. Furthermore, the factors that caused students difficulties were: the students difficult to translate the vocabulary and the students did not try to practice the vocabulary so that they could not memorize it.
