Abstract

This thesis entitled “An Analysis of Students’ Difficulties in Understanding English Reading Descriptive Text: A Case Study at 8th Grade Students at SMPN 12 Mataram in Academic Year 2018/2019” was aimed to find the students experience difficulties in understanding English reading text. The population of this study was eight grade students at SMPN 12 Mataram. There were 31 students were taken as the sample, and sampling technique used was purposive sampling. In collecting the data, it was applied two instruments reading test and questionnaire. The descriptive method was used to expose the result in this research. The data analysis result of reading test were: 5 students were classified as excellent (16.12%), 4 students were classified as good (12.90%), 10 students were classified as fair (32.25%), 7 students were classified as poor (22.58%), 5 students were classified as complete failure (16.12%). The result show that most of students in the second grade students of SMPN 12 Mataram were classified in fair to complete failure position. In addition, the questionnaire result presented that they were still difficult to know what the main ide of text 23 (74%), the most of factor that caused students difficulty was because their lack of grammar knowledge 26 (83%), then they lack of vocabulary influence the student in translating English word 25 (80%). The environment caused lack of their school did not provide enough reading material for them 25 (80%), so that they cannot learn reading well. Most of students can be concluded that they were still difficult to understanding the descriptive text material.
