Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing Grammatical Cohesion in Beauty and The Beast Movie Script of conversation spoken by some characters in it. Grammatical cohesion is the term used to describe the grammatical means by which sentences and paragraphs are linked and relationship between them established. Grammatical cohesion is the way grammatical feature is attached within a text or sentence that holds a text together and gives it meaning. In cohesion in English, Halliday and Hasan identify four types of grammatical cohesion, those are; reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction. This study was designed by using descriptive qualitative method because the data of this study were in the form of utterances or dialogue, which were not statistically analyzed. This study also used Discourse Analysis Perspective because the researcher wanted to know how language is used and to know types and functions of grammatical cohesion used in the movie script. The data showed that there are four types of grammatical cohesion and its function, in the line of Halliday and Hasan’s theory of cohesion. The result of the analysis showed that there are four types of grammatical cohesion, which are; reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction. Yet, the researcher did not find kinds of verbal substitution and nominal ellipsis. Based on the data finding and discussion, it is suggested for the next researchers who want to conduct a study in the same field to analyze another cohesion which is lexical cohesion that will enrich the data in the study.
