Abstract

This research was aimed at identifying, describing, and analyzing the speech acts and their implied meaning in the Indonesian presidential election debates in 2019. The whole expressions were analyzed based on Austin’s and Searle’s theories of speech acts and Grice’s theory of cooperative principle. This research was descriptive qualitative in nature with a pragmatic analysis approach. The data of the study were taken from YouTube containing the debate between two presidential candidates in 2019. The data then analyzed based on the use of speech act and implied meaning performed by both candidates. The result of this study shows that both presidential candidates used three types of speech acts with frequency of using 299 locutionary, 392 illocutionary and 29 perlocutionary. In this case, illocutionary act is mostly used by the candidates because this speech acts are used to give the statements and explanations about the programs that they would use if they were elected as presidents in Indonesia. Then the second finding in this research is that the Presidential candidates also violated the cooperative principles with 13 violations for maxim of quantity, 6 violations for maxim of quality, 5 violations for maxim of relevance, and 8 violations for maxim of manner. In addition, the writer found that the reason for flouting maxims in the debate occurred because the speaker or speech partner provided more or less information than needed, provided information that was clearly incorrect or he did not have sufficient evidence, making a very clear response irrelevant to the previous topic, and provided unclear or ambiguous information. This violation occurs because the candidates did not really understand the field in question so that they provided information that is not in accordance with what is needed.
