Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out the students difficulties in learning speaking, cause of the students difficulties in learning speaking, and students learning to deal with such difficulties. The research was conducted in SMPN 2 Kediri by using qualitative method. The data were gained by using two kinds of instruments; questionnaires and observation. There were twenty six students from the second grade chosen as the sample. The participants were given the first questionnaire consisted of 10 aspects of the problem and the second questionnaire consisted of 31 items of questionnaires to check the prefered learning strategy. It can be seen from both questionnaire and observation, The students used six kinds of different language learning strategies; meta-cognitive (12,1%), memory (16,2%), affective (13%), social (18%), cognitive (23,7%) and compensation (17%). The percentage of students’ problem in speaking related the problems of speaking are; Pronunciation (20%), grammar (46%), vocabulary (42%), student (100%), teacher (30%), method (23%), material (30%), facility (26%), and motivation (76%). Thus, it can be concluded that students’ factor is the most dominant problem in speaking, while the most dominant learning strategies used by students to deal with the speaking problem are cognitive and social strategies.
