Abstract

Background: Medical students tend to have higher stress levels compared to general population. Continual stress can lead to burnout in medical students. Medical students also have worse sleep quality compared to students from other study programs. Incidence of burnout and poor sleep quality in medical students can affect academic performance. The aim of this study were to analyze the correlation between burnout and sleep quality with academic achievement of medical students. Method: This study was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine, Mataram University. It was a cross-sectional study involving first, second and third-year preclinical students. Burnout on students was assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory Student Survey (MBI-SS). Sleep quality in students was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). A total of 231 students participated in this study. Results: 106 students (45.9%) experienced high exhaustion, 130 students (56.3%) experienced high cynicism and 138 students (59.7%) experienced low personal efficacy. There were 217 students (93.9%) with poor sleep quality. Students with higher score in exhaustion or cynicism had worse sleep quality ( r = 0.415 for exhaustion, r = 0.230 for cynicism, both p <0.01). Students with lower personal efficacy scores had worse sleep quality (p = <0.05; r = -0.153). Students with poorer sleep quality scores had lower academic performance (p = <0.01; r = -0.172). Students with lower personal efficacy scores had lower academic performance (p = <0.01; r = 0.314). Conclusion: There is significant correlation between burnout with sleep quality, sleep quality with academic achievement and personal efficacy with academic achievement.
