Abstract

This thesis entitled the meanings of happiness in the ―Pursuit of Happyness‖ movie and its implication to learning EFL. The movie is a biography movie that is based on autobiography of Chris Gardner, an African- American billionaire stockbroker. The main character, Chris Gardner, tried really hard pursuing his own happiness that he links to the material wealth. Along with the time he realized that happiness is not only about wealth, but to find out his objectives as human being. The data applied in this thesis is qualitative data. The data collection which is from the movie itself and library research, journals and website articles. The data documented from selected quotation by the dialogue of the movie. This thesis is a descriptive study which is elaborates the meanings of happiness in the movie, to analyze the misspelling of ―happyness‖ and the implication of the movie to learning EFL. The findings of this study reveal that the meanings of happiness according to the movie have ten different meanings, such as happiness is not only about material wealth; happiness is to living with a passion and happiness in religion sights. The misspelling of ―happyness‖ in the title of the movie is deliberately misspelled on purposes. And the implication of the movie to learning EFL is to give the learners motivation and inspiration to be better irrespective of their current situation. In conclusion, the meanings of happiness can only succeeded by hard work and not giving up easily to pursuing the happiness and dream.
