Abstract

Bamboo fiber is one of the natural fibers that has the potential to be used as a composite material. Research related to natural fiber composites and their applications in sandwich panels as an alternative to synthetic materials has been done quite a lot. However, previous studies are generally carried out using methods based on standards, the conclusions drawn only based on descriptive statistics without involving the hypothesis testing process using inferential statistics. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the orientation of the composition of the fiber on the bamboo- polyester composite on mechanical properties, and determine the mechanical strength difference of the sandwich panel made of bamboo fiber composite as a skin and Sengon Wood as a core, when compared to Solid Meranti Wood and Solid Jati Wood , by applying the analysis of variance (ANOVA) method. The method used in this study is a pure experimental method carried out in two stages, the first stage is testing the tensile and flexural strength of composites with continous, woven, and random fiber variations, referring to the ASTM D-638 standard for tensile test and ASTM D-790 standard for flexure test. The second step is to test the bending of the sandwich panel made of Sengon Wood as a core, and the skin is made of bamboo fiber composite with the strongest orientation based on the results of stage one testing, with the three-point bending method according to the ASTM C-393 standard. The experimental results were then analyzed using the one-way ANOVA method. The variation of the orientation fiber arrangement has a significant influence on the mechanical value of the bamboo-polyester fiber composite. Composites with continous fiber structure orientation have higher mechanical strength compared to composites with weaving and random orientation. Based on the ANOVA test results, for tensile and flexural tests, the F table value is smaller than the calculated F value, it can be concluded that the variation of orientation fiber arrangement has a significant effect on the mechanical value of the Bamboo-polyester composite. The Sandwich Panel whose skin is made of Bamboo-Polyester composite with the strongest orientation, which is continous, and the cores are made of Sengon Wood, in resisting bending loads, 6.97% stronger than Meranti Wood, and 68.58% weaker than Jati Wood. From the ANOVA test results obtained F table value is smaller than the calculated F value, it can be concluded that, Sandwich Panel has a significant difference from the comparative wood in resisting bending loads.
