Abstract

There are many issues that affect the stability of dams. According to the Geological Investigation Report on the Napun Gete dam, the dam was constructed on alternating and variable units of volcanic breccia and tuffaceous sandstone. The rock units are highly porous, thus creating rock-water interaction areas that result on an impoundment of a large freshwater reservoir underneath the dam. Moreover, the stability of a dam on a jointed rock foundation might be endangered by weak joints that may be present in the fracture network of the bed rock. They may be weathered by the flow of water which can lead to a reduction of strength, and in turn, may affect the stability of the dam. This research was conducted to perceive the safety factor of the Napun Gete dam against geological setting in current condition and on different geotechnical circumstances. roviding recommendations for the Napun Gete Dam within an unstable condition. The stability of the Napun Gete Dam will be analysed in two methods. These methods are empirical equation method and numerical method using finite element method with Phi-c reduction. According to the research, The safety factor of the Napun Gete dam without grouting against geological setting are 1,52 at the end of construction, 0,72 at maximum water level, and 1,49 at minimum water level. The safety factor of the Napun Gete dam in current grouting against geological setting are 1,91 at the end of construction, 1,59 at maximum water level, and 1,74 at minimum water level. The safety factor of the Napun Gete dam on variation I by increasing hole depth of subcurtain to 15 meters are obtained 1,60 at maximum water level and 1,75 at minimum water level. On variation II by increasing hole depth of subcurtain to 20 metres and increasing number of subcurtain, the safety factors are obtained 1,57 at maximum water level and 1,73 at minimum water level.
