Abstract

This study examines parents’ language choice and its relation with Sasak-Indonesian Code Switching which is conveyed by the descants of Sasak-Sasak,Sasak-Samawa, Sasak-Mbojo, Sasak-Java and ‘others group’. ‘Others group’ is intra-marital relation within Samawa-Samawa, Java-Java, Mbojo-Mbojo, Bali-Bali etc. The purposes of this study are to find out the types of code switching which are dominantly permormed by those descants; language elements are being switched; factors motivate them perform code switching; and comparison between code switching performed by Sasak-Sasak descants and those performed by other group.This study uses data collection and the ethnography of communication as the methodology. The ethnography of communication is used to guide the collection and analysis of descriptive data. Hence, this study uses recordings, transcriptions and data analysis as the approaches to achieve the reseach goal. From 77 switches, this study found that 35 (45.45%) of the respondents perform intra sentential codeswitching, 38 (49.35%) of the respondents perform inter sentential code switching, and only 4 (5.20%) of the respondents perform tag switching.Moreover,language elements which are used in intra sentential switching shows thatVerb is the higher percentages with 28.3% than others, meawhile in inter sentential code switching shows that Noun is the higher percentages with 23.9%. In addition, 48% of them are motivated to perform code switching in particular topic, 36% of them to express group identityand 8% of them perform it to clarify as well as interjection. This study also found that intra sentential code switching are performed mostly by Sasak-Sasak descents with 42.86%, followed by Sasak-Java descents with 22.9%, 14.3% of Sasak-Bima descants and only 8.6% of Sasak-Samawa descants. Whiles in inter sentential code switching 36.8% of Sasak-Sasak descants are still dominant, it is followed by Sasak-Mbojo 26.3% and Sasak-Bali is only 10.5%. Finally, tag switching is also performed by Sasak-Sasak descants.
