Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to investigate whether the activity of playing PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds game could be considered to learning situations such bulding up the players’ speaking skill and increase a player’s motivation for learning English. The reason behind this study is that participation in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds game will engage the players, encourage players to communicate with each other and work together to achieve common objectives. With the focus on speaking, this study investigates the possibility that the players could increase motivation while playing PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds game. The methodology is based on qualitative observation and on interviews with 4 teams of 8 different players. Data are collected through observation and interview. The observation was reflected in taking notes while playing the game. The observations mainly considered the speaking used in the games and how the players used the English language while playing. The interview questions aimed to answer if the players had been noticing a progress of their speaking. From the qualitative data, it was found that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds game increase the players’ speaking skill and the motivation for learning English. Even though the data acquired from the observations and interviews are limited, it is apparent that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds game has a noticeable impact on language development, regarding to speaking skill especially in vocabulary related to survival and skills in giving commands or asking for help or assistance through the use of PUBG PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds game. The research finding shows that players’ speaking skill improved in the term of the players’ activeness in: 1) gaming as a leisure activity. Gaming has done more than become a hobby for people who are bored. It has built a community. It’s done more than just provide a way to escape from reality, it’s brought people together. All the interviewees which consist of 8 players were relatively active gamers, with their time spent on games ranging from roughly an hour each day to up to four hours each day. 2) Gaming as vocabulary learning experiences. The most common examples of learning English that the participants could put into words had to do with the learning of vocabulary. While all participants did mention that they believed vocabulary was one aspect of language which an EFL learner could learn through PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds game. it proven that 4 out of the 8 players notice any progress of their English speaking skill, 1 player said his speaking skill only improved a little, and 2 players did not answered the question. 3) PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds game triggers motivation for the learners. 7 out of the 8 players believed that their motivation of learning English had increase. The need for language skills that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds game provides was found to be a motivating factor for learning by some of the participants.
