Abstract
One of language skill that should be mastered by students is speaking. It means that everybody needs to study English. They need to speak English to practice their skill. Especially, the students who take English as their primary subject. As in fact, it is commonly found that Senior High School students don’t speak English fluently, or worse they don’t even practice how to speak. This case inspires the researcher to make a research about students’ speaking difficulties. The research questions of this study are : 1). What are the students’ difficulties in learning speaking at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Jonggat in the academic year 2019/2020? 2 ). What are the dominant factors that cause the students’ difficulties in learning speaking at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Jonggat in the academic year 2019/2020?. The study is descriptive qualitative, and the subject of this study is the students at the eleventh grade of XI IPA 1, SMA Negreri 1 Jonggat. To get the data, the researcher uses questionnaires and observation. The researcher finds the factors that cause difficulties in learning speaking. The factors are both come from internal and external. The internal factors include fear of mistakes, shyness, anxiety, lack of confidence, lack of motivation, and lack of knowledge.
