Abstract
The aim of this research is to identify the types of cohesive devices and to find out the coherence and cohesion in the background section of the theses. This thesis examined 15 background section texts written by English Department Students at the University of Mataram. As the source of data, the samples were analyzed by using qualitative descriptive method. Hence, the data were described in the form of words, phrases and sentences. The result of this research shows that cohesive device of demonstrative reference was the most dominantly used with 758 times of occurrence, while personal reference appeared to be the second dominantly used with 253 times of occurrence, meanwhile comparative reference was used the least with only 23 times of occurrence. Meanwhile, in terms of coherence and cohesion as seen from Theme system, there were 727 Theme choices in the 15 background section of the theses. The Theme choices appeared in four categories: textual Theme (222), marked topical Theme (122), unmarked topical Theme (361), and interpersonal Theme (22). The result of the data analysis indicated that unmarked topical Theme is the most applied Theme in the background section. In sum, the high use of demonstrative reference is to maintain the cohesiveness in the text and provide links between elements in the text. Besides, unmarked topical theme is to emphasize the topic of the clause and to highlight the field under discussion.
