Abstract

This study attempted to describe the implementation of character education in the teaching of English at SMPN18 Mataram. The objectives of this study are: (1) to identify and describe character values applied in SMPN 18 Mataram; (2) to know the problems and challenges of character education faced by the teachers in SMPN 18 Mataram. The respondents of the research were the two teachers who teaching English. The data were collected using interview guide and observation checklist, and were analyzed by using qualitative descriptive method. Result of the study indicates that a) there are twelve character values are found. Those characters finds inside and outside of the classroom randomly, i.e. religiosity, honesty, tolerance, discipline, hard work, creativity, independence, curiosity, friendliness or communicativeness, fondness of reading, environmental awareness, and responsibility. b) There are two problems that teachers face in implementing character education, those are the internal factor include students‟ ego, and external factors include incompatibility of instruction with action and students‟ unexpected behavior. Each of them tells about the family and social/community environments. And the challenges that the teachers face in implementing character education are external factor include the community culture and internal factor include lack of students‟ motivation.
