Abstract

Learning strategies is used to help students to learn English well. Therefore, an awareness of how to learn language is important to know the characteristic of students that can help them improve their language learning efficiency. This research study aimed to (a) describe the most employed English learning strategy used by the students; (b) to describe the reasons why the students employ the most employed English learning strategy. The research employed a qualitative approach. The population of this research was all students at SMPN 19 Mataram. Based on the research finding, the most dominant strategy was cognitive strategy that was used by practicing the sounds of English, watching videos or movies spoken in English and trying to find patterns in English. The study also found some reasons of using cognitive strategy in learning English as follow: the students can understand and remember new vocabulary faster, the students are more comfortable and not fell pressured while studying, the students can practice in understanding the arrangement of the words (the grammar), the students can find out how to pronounce the words correctly, and the students can repeat the video until they can understand about the new words.
