Abstract

This study aims to find what kinds of difficulties that students‟ have in mastering English vocabulary and investigate the factors that causing the difficulties in mastering English vocabulary. The design of this study was descriptive quantitative study and the data were collected through test and questionnaire. The subject of this study was firs grade students of SMAN 1 BATULAYAR which consisting of 36 students. Subject of th study is determined by using population sampling. The result showed that there were three kinds of difficulties in mastering English vocabulary those are: Appropriate use meaning and spelling. As the result of the research the writer found out that there were (48%) of students who failed to provide correct answer related to appropriate use matter (they were not able to identify the expressions and use some vocabularies in appropriate context), there were (61%) of them who failed to provide correc answer related to meaning matter (they were not able to translate some vocabularies and find the synonym of the vocabularies) and, there were (60%) o them were unable to provide correct answer related to spelling matter (they were really lack of vocabulary or they were not really familiar with some vocabularie that asked in the category of spelling), or (52.8%) of students of SMAN 1 Batulaya found the difficulties in mastering vocabulary and it categorized into Very Poor category And the major problems causing those difficulties were: they did not use their free time to study vocabulary (outside class), the next problem is that they did not use the dictionary that they have or that is available at school, and they got the problems when they pronouncing English vocabulary.
