Abstract

This research focuses on finding the way humor is produced in both Indonesian and English Stand-up Comedy. The data were collected using manuscripts from stand-up comedy videos. Stand-up comedy is a show where the comedian performs a joke with humorous intentions. The reason in choosing this show is that has numerous humor expression that can be analyzed by Grice’s cooperative principle theory including the maxims and Martin’s forms of humor. Based on the finding from the data, it can be concluded that even though the cooperative principle is made to make cooperate exchange of information, there are always people fails to observe the maxim. The comedian tends to flout the maxim especially maxim of quality and make much spontaneous conversational humor (SCH) while delivering the show. The flouting maxim of quality happened in high- frequency numbers due to it is related to the quality of the information that is offered. The comedian leads the audience way of thinking and then suddenly twisted their expectation, either it is expected or unexpected to be.
