Abstract

The thesis entitled “The Students’ Ability in Using Independent and Dependent Clauses in Complex Sentences at the Fifth Semester Students of English Education Department of Mataram University” proposes to find out (1) the students’ ability in using independent and dependent clauses in complex sentences, (2) the students’ common mistakes in using complex sentences. This study used descriptive quantitative method to collect and analyze the data. Therewere 225 subject as the population and there were35 random studentstaken as samples. To collectthe data this study used a written test as the instrument. The result showedthere was 1 student (2.86%) classified into excellent, 2 students (5.71%) classified into very good, 8 students (22.86%) classified into good, 6students (17.14%) classified as fairy good, 8 students (22.86%) classified into fair, 7 students (20%) classified into poor, and 3 students (8.57%) classified into very poor category. The mean score is 57.8 whichwas categorizedas “fair” level of the students’ ability in using independent and dependent clauses in complex sentences in the fifth semester students of English Education Department in Mataram University. Additionally,from the data analysis, it wasfound that the students’ common mistakes werein using noun clausewithpercentage32.70%. There were 28.18%of mistakes in using adjective clause, 23.14%in using adverbial clause, and 7.42% in using independent clause.
