Abstract

This research aimed to identify the kinds of category shifts are contained in novel The Alchemist. It is also aimed to describe the translation of symbolism found in the novel. The data were collected from The Alchemist and Sang Alkemis which were presented using descriptive qualitative method. The findings of this research reveal that the translator applied all four types of category shift in order to make equivalence in translating the novel from English to Indonesian. Category shift consists of structure shift, class shift, unit shift, and intra-system shit. The result of this research shows that there are 785 data of category shift in total. From those 785 data, intra-system shift become the dominant shift applied by the translator. There are 292 cases or about 37.15%. Structure shift is the second dominant to occur; there are 246 cases or about 31.30%. There are 195 cases or about 24.80% of unit shift. Then, class shift, was the least found in the translation, there are 52 or about 6.74%. In addition, in this research, the researcher found five major symbolisms using by the author in order to give a deeper impression to the story. These five symbolisms are desert, the alchemy, the pyramids, the abandoned church and the oasis. These five symbols were translated by using the translation shift process in order to transfer the idea and meaning to the target language, even though these symbols experienced shifting or changing, the idea or messages still can be accepted by the target readers.
