Abstract

This research aims to find out the kinds of illocutionary acts in the speech of Mr. Jokowi at APEC CEO Summit Beijing 2014 and its impacts to the hearers. The data of this study was descriptive and qualitative in nature by watching a speech video, reading its script, identifying utterances of illocutionary acts, classifying them into their types by applying the theory of Searle (1979). Furthermore, the impacts were analyzed by reading some online news that related to the illocutionary acts data. The data was in the form of a speech video and its script that were downloaded from APEC YouTube Channel and Kompas.com. The result of this study shows that 21 utterances are categorized as illocutionary acts, of which 15 utterances are assertives, 2 utterances are directives, 1 utterance is commissives, and 3 utterances are expressives. These illocutionary acts have given a positive impact on the national policies of United States of America, China, and Japan to invest in particular projects in Indonesia. Thus, the impacts are known as perlocutionary acts. A further research needs to be conducted comprehensively in order to get consistency of its result.
