Abstract

owadays, people cannot be separated from digital life. People use technology to communicate and connectwithpeople around the world. The social media is a widely used information and communication technology nowadays. Therefore, the existence of social media also brings a language phenomenon such as code switching.This study entitled “THE USE OF CODE SWITCHING ON INDONESIAN CELEBRITIES‟ INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT” focuses on two purposes. First is finding types of code switching used by the Indonesian celebrities‟ on their Instagram account, and the secondis determining the reasons for them in doing code switching. This research isa sociolinguistics research and used discourse analysis to answer the two research questions. The data used in this research were collected from Indonesian celebrities‟ Instagram account throughobservation.The research results showed that the types of code-switching occurred in Indonesian celebrities‟ Instagram accountare tag-switching, inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching. The Indonesian celebrities also used some combination of the mentioned types in their Instagram. Furthermore, the reasons of using code switching in the Indonesian celebrities‟ Instagram account are: talking about particular topic; being empathic about something; using interjection; intention of clarifying; showing personal/group identity;and quoting somebody. There was onereason provided by the expert not found in the Indonesian celebrities‟ Instagram account, repetition.
