Abstract

This study was aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant difference between male and female students‟ ability in answering factual and vocabulary-in- context questions of the TOEFL-Like reading comprehension test. Secondary data analysis was utilized by taking reading comprehension test scores of twenty-one male and twenty-one female students of the English Education Program. Samples were selected using random sampling technique. Data were analysed using independent sample t-test. Results show that there is a difference between male and female students‟ ability in answering factual questions (with the mean scores at 26.2 for the males and 22.6 for the females) and vocabulary-in-context questions (the mean scores at 30.2 for the males and 30.7 for the females) of the TOEFL-Like reading comprehension test but the difference is not significant. It is proven statistically by the fact that the value of Sig. 2-tailed in the independent sample t-test is higher than 0.05 ((0.267 > 0.05) in factual questions and (0.837 > 0.05) in vocabulary-in-context questions)).
