Abstract

This study aims to examine students’ perceptions of different activities in speaking class, which one is the most preferred activity, and activities that helped them improve their speaking skills. The respondents of this study were 52 6th- semester students of English education. This research used a qualitative method. The researcher used two instruments to gather data from the students: (1) a Questionnaire, and (2) an Interview. The data analysis was based on procedures of data analysis that consists of the data collection, the data reduction, the data display, and conclusion. The result of the descriptive analysis shows that most of the students of VI D English Class agreed that speaking activities in the speaking class needed more improvements, the time provided in speaking class needs to be expanded. Students in D Class preferred to learn or present to speak English with their friends, work in pairs or groups. Students chose discussion, describing pictures, and role-play as the activity that helped them to improve their speaking skills.
