Abstract

Emotional wellness in the time of learning speaking among university students is recognized as an important issue, therefore more data on psychological problems, factors that hinder students in learning speaking, the students’ expectations for future speaking classes, and effective strategies to overcome them are needed that allows us to find best solutions to the problems. All enrolled second semester students of English education program at Mataram University were invited to complete an online-based survey. The psychological problems were assessed using qualitative method. A number of 50 students participated in the study representative to the second semester population. The results show that psychological problems faced by the students in learning speaking included: anxiety, fear of making mistakes, feeling of shyness, lack of confidence, and lack of motivation. The leading psychological problem is anxiety that comprises 25%. Causes of the problems were associated with: fear of negative responses from their classmates, fear of sounding silly, and feeling of shyness to express their thoughts. In coping with these problems, most students used strategies like practicing their English in front of the mirror and talking with other friends’(26%). Despite the many problems, a small number of students have problem with lack of motivation (12%) which means that most of them have strong motivation to learn and improve their speaking skill. The results provide evidence that psychological problems in learning speaking among university students do exist. They also highlight the need for serious efforts to overcome the psychological problems faced by the students.
