Abstract

The main objective of this study is to analyze and describe the lexical density and grammatical intricacy of English reading texts in textbook used in senior high school. This study is approached by using Halliday‟s (1985) theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics and Eggin‟s (2004) theory. The data of the study are derived from the textbook in the form of lexical items and clauses which are then analyzed using descriptive qualitative method. The results of this study indicate that the average score of lexical density of the 10 reading texts (4.37) is categorized as medium between 3 and 5, which means that most of the reading texts have good quality in terms of their content and the texts are easy enough to be comprehended. This is most likely to happen because of the higher lexical items in the reading texts. In relation to grammatical intricacy, the average score of grammatical intricacy in the reading texts settles in 1.5 which shows that the level of lexical density is higher than the level of the grammatical intricacy. This indicates that those reading texts have the tendency to comply with one of the characteristics of written language in which the level of lexical density tend to be high while the level of grammatical intricacy tend to be low. In other words, the reading texts are written language which contains much of information which is delivered through various lexical items and they use simple sentence because they contain fewer clauses per sentence.
