Abstract

This research is aimed at figuring out the effect of authentic materials on students’ vocabulary mastery. It was conducted at SMPN 8 Mataram in 2020/2021 academic year. Quasi-experimental study is chosen as the research design in which two classes are used as sample. One of them is called experimental class administered by using authentic materials and the other one named control class that is administered without using authentic materials. Purposive sampling technique is used in choosing the sample. Then 21 eighth grade students are gathered for the experimental class and 21 other students as the control class. The result of this research shows that the value of t-test (0.51) with the degree of freedom (df) 40 is lower than t-table (2.021) and (2.704) in confidence level 95% and 99%. It indicates that the use of authentic materials does not have significant effect on students’ vocabulary mastery. Then the null hypothesis (Ho) which states that “there is no significant effect of using authentic printed materials on students’ vocabulary mastery” fails to be rejected. Thus, the use of authentic materials on students’ vocabulary mastery is not really effective.
