Abstract

This study discusses the analysis and description of applicative and causative constructions in Belitong language under the qualitative descriptive study alongside Relational Grammar (RG) theory. Additionally, those constructions are also accounted for strategy patterns proposed by Peterson (2007) and Comrie (1989) respectively. The data were taken by elicitation technique, interview with the native speakers, and documentation of the previous studies along with some additional literatures as well. The results suggested that: (1) Belitong accounts for normal and abnormal applicative constructions. They appear naturally along with the verbs inflection by suffixes -ek, - kan, -an, -rek, or zero marker -Ø; (2) morphological causatives are signalled out by certain markers like suffixes -an, -ek, -kan or zero marker -Ø on the verbs whilst analytic causatives are indicated by additional verbs such as muat, isak, gara-gara, nyuro, base, melasa, karne, and muji; (3) passivization strategy is suitable for all applicative and causative constructions whereby passive prefix de- appears as the marker on the verbs. To sum up, relational structures for normal applicative constructions are formulated as: OBL 2 (intransitive); OBL 2, 2 Cho (transitive). Meanwhile, abnormal applicative constructions: OBL 1, 1 2 (intransitive); OBL 1, 1 2, 2 Cho (transitive). Additionally, the relational structure of morphological causatives constructions: 1 2 (causative); OBL 2, 2 Cho (applicative-causative) for intransitive clause; 1 2, 2 Cho (monotransitive); and 1 2, 2 Cho, OBL OBL (transitive). Analytic causatives account for relational structure such as: 1 2, 2 3 for causative markers like muat, gara-gara, nyuro, melasa; and 1 1, 2 2 for causative markers like karne, base, muji.
