Abstract

This thesis is entitled An Analysis of Lawas as a Traditional Literary Work and Its Function to Preserve Local Wisdom in Sumbawa was intended to find out the structure, meaning, and function that lead to the values of Lawas as a cultural product of Sumbawanese. The data in this research methodologically collected and analyzed using a descriptive- qualitative method where it was primarily gathered using the interview of the participants who are recognized as good informants in acknowledging Lawas. Secondarily, the library study was also intended to see the deep structure of Lawas. The result of the research shows that the role of Lawas is essential because it becomes the foundation of conveying the value of local wisdom in society. The creation of Lawas were also known to be developed based on the three fundamental beliefs in Samawa that are consist of Paboat aji lako nene, Paboat aji lako inak bapak, and Paboat aji lako guru. These have become the main concern of values in Lawas revealed. Along with the development of Lawas from past to present era, it is renowned that Lawas has also elements that consisted in poetry in general such as introduction, message, closing, rhyme, symbol, and figurative language. In terms of their form, Lawas was built based on three stanzas and consists of eight syllables but it was intended to be changed along with the modernization where Lawas nowadays structuralized using six stanzas and Sumbawanese as Lawas Sanepat recognizes it. Not only in their surface structure but it is believed that lawas is used to teach the values that delivers through local wisdom such as sakeco, ngumang, badede, batutir, bagonteng, etc. The values of Lawas also developed where it has been confirmed from the result of the analysis that Lawas are covers terminal and instrumental values. The terminal values are consist of cultural, educational, social, historical, spiritual, moral, and political values. While the instrumental values are known to have consisted of economic values. .
