Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the students’ ability in writing narrative text, the difficulties in writing narrative text and the factor which contribute to the students’ ability in writing narrative text. This study is a case study research which was conducted at SMAN 1 Kediri in even semester of academic year 2017/2018. The population of this study is all of twelfth grade students and from the population, 22 students from XII IPA1 was taken as the sample. In collecting the data, two kinds of instruments were used by the writer; those are narrative written tests and questionnaire which was adopted from SILL by Oxford (1990). The result of students qualification of the written test were; none of the students was qualified as excellent (0%), 1 student was qualified as good (5%), 9 students were qualified as fair (45%), 6 students qualified as low (30%) and 4 students were qualified as very low (20%). Then from the result, it can be seen that most of students was still unable to write narrative texts. Therefore, it can be concluded that the ability in writing narrative texts at the twelfth grade students of SMAN 1 Kediri was classified as low category. In addition, the students still have difficulties in writing narrative texts especially in develop an ideas, incoherent paragraph, and spelling. In aspect of ideas, some of the students only used few and simple ideas in writing and their ideas in whole story were mostly not coherent. On the other hand, some of the students’ writing did not show the use of good paragraphing. They only wrote into one paragraph from beginning until the end of the story. Also, related to the spelling, most students frequently misspelled the words. The results of questionnaire showed that the main factor which contributes to the students’ ability in writing narrative texts is cognitive strategy. It can be seen from the questions that most students chose always to translate from Bahasa Indonesia to English when producing English writing
