Abstract
This thesis is entitled “Illocutionary Act of Islamic Caption in Social Media: A Pragmatic Study” aiming at investigating the implied meaning of Islamic caption in social media and identifying the driving or intrinsic force that triggers people post Islamic caption on social media. This study is qualitative in that it is describing the nature of the illocutionary act of Islamic caption on social media through deeper elaboration. In obtaining the data, this study employed observation, interview, and documentation. The source of data was from four different professions namely religious figure, religious fans page, high school or university students, and teachers. This study gathered five captions in each profession. It showed that among four professions which were analyzed through speech act sentential theories, they were mainly used directive in the amount of (45 %), while representative and expressive were each (20 %), commissive (10%), and declarative (5 %). It was also revealed that majority of respondents claimed to have similar non-linguistic motivations with the posted captions which fell into a directive act which is used to ask someone to do something.
