Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out the teaching and learning policy before National Exam (NE) in academic year 2019/2020 regardless the cancellation of its implementation and the challenges found during that particular of time. This study was conducted as qualitative research. Three different English teachers who taught English for the third grade students from different schools were interviewed to gather the data. The results showed that teachers taught students for the NE preparation in the second semester. The strategy used for teaching was by giving students NE-like- test to be answered and familiarized the students by the test items. Whereas, for the challenges were: a) skills taught was limited only to certain skills and abandoned the other skill like speaking, as that skill was not tested in NE, b) Less meaningful, fun and creative classroom activity, as the teaching strategy was fixed to discuss former NE tests, c) The test was too hard for students because of their poor English, d) NE preparation did not develop students’ communicative skill, e) The problem of conducting the NE preparation with the inadequate facilities to support the learning process. Therefore, by the transformation of the future education system and curriculum, it is expected that communicative based learning in English subject can be more accomplished.
