Abstract
This study portraits teacher’s roles in building students’ characters in a movie entitled Freedom writers. This thesis uses theory of role as theoretical framework in finding out teacher’s roles. This research is done through descriptive and qualitative research. The roles presented based on problems that were common faced by the teacher in a movie. The writer uses Republic of Indonesia’s Constitutions No.14 in 2005 concerning Teachers and Lectures Article 1 as source to classify the findings of teacher’s roles in building students’ characters. It was found 8 kinds of teacher’s roles such as teacher as educator, demonstrator, mediator, facilitator, inspiration, motivator, corrector, and evaluator. Then, the roles were related with 11 kinds of students’ characters that were able to build by the teacher through various kinds of teacher’s roles. Those values were respectful, loving peace, communicative, loving reading, honesty, social care, tolerance, friendly, independence, work hard, and responsibility. In addition, this is very important to be considered in building students’ characters so that the purpose of national education is achieved.
