Abstract

This study aims to reveal the cultural aspects of target language contained in senior high school English textbooks and to find out how much of cultural aspects of the target language represented in each textbook. To analyze the data, the researcher employed Byram (1994)’s nine cultural aspects criteria by conducting qualitative content analysis method. The sources of data are from textbook Bahasa Inggris Kelas XII (T1), textbook Pathway to English for Grade XII (T2), and textbook Contextual English for grade XII (T3). The result shows that T2 has more ideal target culture-related contents than the others. It covers 89% cultural aspects in which Byram (1994) considers important to be incorporated for cultural learning. Furthermore, T3 includes 78% cultural aspects, while T1 includes 67% of cultural aspects. Therefore, it could be inferred that each textbook used in this research presented cultural contents with different quality of presentation and the most appropriate cultural aspects is contained in T2, as known as textbook Pathway to English for Grade XII.
