Abstract

The main objective of this study is to analyse and describe the types of vocabulary, meaning and also function of vocabulary in the lyric of the songs from each genre according to Holt (2007). This study approached by using Hatch and Brown’s (1995) theory of types of vocabulary and Halliday’s (1975) theory. The data of the study are derived from lyric of the song which are then analysed using descriptive qualitative method. The results of this study indicate that the lyrics of the song contains a number of different vocabularies in each genre which are divided into two types of vocabulary and shows that the vocabulary of productive type appears more in the song lyrics for each genre, which means that all genres of songs are good for learning English vocabulary because students need more productive vocabulary in their learning to further improve their ability to master English vocabulary. As a result, soul/R&B came out as the best genre of song in teaching English vocabulary because it is seen in terms language, there is more amount of productive vocabulary than in the other genres. Followed by hip-hop genre in second and heavy metal as a third. Moreover, it is found 38 function of vocabulary in each genre, which means the song is actually very suitable to be used as English teaching material because it has number of types and functions of vocabulary in each genres of song. In other hands, some genres of songs often use word repetitions so as to reduce the amount of vocabulary used, it can reduce the amount of vocabulary received by students.
