Abstract

This research aims to analyze the types of illocutionary acts performed by the candidates in 2016 US First Presidential Debate. It focuses on identifying what types of illocutionary acts used in the debate based on Searle’s classification of speech acts and analyzing the intended meaning used by the candidates. This research used the video of 2016 US First Presidential Debate as the primary source and the debate script containing dialogues as the secondary source of data. In conducting the research, the researcher used qualitative descriptive method. The existence of quantitative data was used to perform the number of occurrences of each type of speech acts. The researcher was the main instrument and the data sheets were the supporting instrument. Furthermore listening, reading and note taking were the techniques which employed to collect the data. In increasing the credibility to maintain the data trustworthiness, investigator triangulation was applied. The research reveals three findings. First, there were 198 utterances of illocutionary acts found in the debate. The types of illocutionary acts used by the candidates are representative with 15 actions, directive with 5 actions, expressive with 8 actions, and commissive with 3 actions. Second, the most dominant type used by the candidates is representative illocutionary act with 138 data which covered 69.7% of the entire data. They mostly convey the representative to state their beliefs, opinions, claims and convince the listener to follow their wants. Third, it found that the candidates used indirect speech acts in the debate. There were 7 data of Hillary Clinton and 5 data of Donald trump related to indirect speech act utterances. It means she tends to use the indirect speech acts in 2016 US First Presidential debate.
