Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify the types of lexical cohesion and the function of each type of lexical cohesion in a political speech by examining Trikora speech, a speech delivered by Ir. Seokarno. The data were analyzed and presented using descriptive qualitative method. The result of this research shows that there are 6 types of lexical cohesion applied in the speech, they are repetition, synonym, superordinate, general words, the same order series, and unordered lexical set. Meanwhile, the lexical cohesive device that is dominantly found in the speech is repetition with 73 times of occurrences. It is followed by synonym (15 times), superordinate (8 times), general words (6), the same ordered series (4), and unordered lexical set (5). The finding reveals that the function of lexical cohesion proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1967), namely “to connect one part of a text to another part in the same text” is implemented in the speech. However, the result of the analysis also shows that there are some functions carried by each type of those devices in support the cohesiveness of a text, they are, to link the idea of the sentences together, to emphasize the point of view, to avoid a tedious text, to refer to categories of a word, to refer forwards to a word, to introduce an interpersonal element into the meaning, and to indicate that the sentences in the speech are related to each other. All of those functions are fundamental in making a meaningful and understandable text in particular political speech.
