Abstract

This research is a pragmatic approach study of Politeness Strategy used in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. This research aims to find out the politeness strategy in request as used by the main characters in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Specifically, this research focus on identifying types of politeness strategy in the term of request used by the main characters based on Brown and Levinson theory, and the reason of the main characters using the strategy. This research used the dialogues of the main characters as the source of the data and this research applied a descriptive qualitative method. Thus, the data were described in the form of words, phrases, and sentences. The result of the research shows types of politeness strategy in request are produced by the main characters in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. They are Bald on Record (32 utterances), Positive Politeness (6 utterances), Negative Politeness (5 utterances), and Off Record Strategy (1 utterance) with the total 44 utterances of politeness strategy. Based on the findings, the reasons that lead the main characters in using politeness strategy are the payoffs and the circumstances. Moreover, utterances indicating politeness strategy by the main characters have intended meaning which the function of pragmatic approach is applied when the main characters say the utterance or spoken text.
