Abstract

The objectives of this study are to find out; (1) The correlation between students’ reading habit and their reading ability on the 2nd semester students’ of English Education Program of FKIP Mataram University in Academic Year 2019/2020. (2) The category of students’ reading habit on the 2nd semester students; and (3) The category of students’ reading ability on the 2nd semester students. The method used in this study is quantitative research and it designed in correlational study. The population of this study was 2nd semester students’ of English Department of Mataram University in Academic Year 2019/2020 and it was 221 students. 35 students were taken to be the sample of this study through random sampling technique. Questionnaire and Documentation of final grade in reading lecture are used as the instruments. A questionnaire is used to measure the students’ reading habit and Documentation of final grade in 2nd semester is used to measure their reading ability. After conducting the research, it was found that the average of students’ reading habit was 72.8, which was categorized as good, and the average of students’ reading ability was 73.1, which was good too. Then, the researcher used Spearman Rank Rho formula in SPSS 25 for Windows to find out the correlation between students’ reading habit and their reading ability. Based on the result, the sig (2-tailed) is 0.003, and the level significant is 0.05, which is lower. So, the decision is significant and positive. It means there is a positive and significant correlation between students’ reading habit and their reading ability on the 2nd semester students’ of English Education Program of FKIP Mataram University in Academic Year 2019/2020.
