Abstract

This research analyzes the types of idiomatic expressions and their context of situation in the movie entitled The Water Diviner. The movie was chosen because the actor and actress often use language expressions that may be categorized as idiomatic expressions. This study employs the theory introduced by Seidl and McMordie (1988) which divides idiom into nine types: keyword with idiomatic uses, idiom with noun and adjective, idiomatic pairs, idiom with preposition, phrasal verb idiom, verbal idiom, idiom for special subject, keyword from special categories, and idiom with comparison. This study also uses the theory by Halliday and Hasan (1989) namely context of situation to contextualize the actual meaning of the idiomatic expressions. This research applies descriptive and qualitative methods to answer two research questions stated in the research questions. The first question is about the types of idiom in The Water Diviner movie. The second research question is about how the context of situations are used and developed in The Water Diviner movie. The data are taken from the movie subtitle. The result of the study indicates that there are five types of idiom with seventy-nine of idiomatic expressions. Most of the idiomatic expressions were in a form of phrasal verb followed by verbal idiom, keyword with idiomatic uses, idiom with preposition and idiom with noun and adjective. It was found that the context of situation in this study were capable to be used to determine the actual meaning of these idiomatic expressions.
