Abstract

This study is aimed to find out (a) the vocabulary complexity found in Grade X and XI textbooks and (b) internal structure of complex Noun Phrases (NPs) found in Grade X and XI textbooks. The source of data was sample reading texts taken from textbooks that are currently used by senior high school students grade X and grade XI provided by Cultural and Educational Ministry of Indonesia. The data of this research were all Noun Phrases found in the long functional texts selected. The data were collected by selecting the relevant text, reading the selected text, and listing NPs. Being largely qualitative, this study analyzed NPs complexity and internal structure of complex NPs. The results of the analyses show that the level of vocabulary complexity found in grade XI textbook is more complex than grade X textbook that can be seen from the percentage of complex NPs found in grade XI textbook is mostly higher than grade X one. Furthermore, study finds that the internal structures contained by complex NPs of grade XI textbook is way more complex than grade X textbook shown by types of modifiers that NPs contained, the length of complex NPs, the number of phrasal nodes, and the degree to which NPs are sentential.
