Abstract

This research is aimed to Analyze Santiago’s Motivation in Ernest Hemingway’s novella The Old Man and the Sea and The Implementation to Character Education. In this study, the writer applied a descriptive analysis method along with Frederick Herzberg’s theory motivation that is called theory two-factor they are hygiene and motivator. This study focuses on analysis Santiago’s motivation and the implementation to character education. The result of the analysis, show that the writer was found that Santiago has strong motivation that is to sufficing his high needs in restoring his self-respect from the society. His motivation is influencing by hygiene factor such as interpersonal relation, and working condition. Whereas, motivator factor there are five factors that influenced Santiago’s motivation such as achievement, recognition, work itself, responsibility, and growth/advancement. Moreover, there are three factors of Santiago’s motivation can be implemented to character education; they are the tolerance value, hard work value, and responsibility value. The conclusion is motivator had a powerful effect on Santiago’s life to be motivated rather than hygiene factor to get back his self-esteem.
