Abstract

Reading is a basic life skill. It is a cornerstone for a child‟s success in school, and indeed, throughout life. Without the ability to read well, opportunities for personal fulfillment and success in studies are sure to be lost. This study was aimed at investigating the types of difficulties and factors that caused the difficulties in the student‟s reading comprehension. A number of 31 students participated in this study. In achieving the goal, the qualitative research method was applied. Data were collected using a reading comprehension test and a questionnaire. The resultsof the data analysis showed that: None of the students could get the perfect score of 100. The majority of them (23 of 31) acquired the “medium” level of difficulty in understanding the reading text with score range of 31-70 comprising 74% of the total students. 6%of themscored very poorly with the “low” level of reading comprehension ability. Only 19% of them passed the “high” level of reading difficulty with the score range of 71-100. By average, with the mean score of 55.3, the students can be classified as belong to the “medium” level of reading understanding. Nonetheless, if the mean score is compared to the kriteria ketuntasan minimal (KKM) of the English subject, which is 75, the score will be lower than the KKM. Meaning that the students have not achieved the standard score required by the national curriculum.In addition, based on the students‟ responses in the questionnaire, they mostly had difficulties in understanding vocabulary, poor mastery of grammar, understanding long sentences, lack of media learning, lack of knowledge of strategies in reading comprehension and less support from the family.
