Abstract

This study attempted to describe and explain the dictions that are frequently used in the comment sections on Instagram, also to describe and explain the functions of the frequently used dictions on Instagram. This study considered as descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected by capturing the comment sections on Instagram in ten Instagram account, those are jokowi, prabowo, ridwankamil, bbcnews, cnn, realdonaldtrump, joebiden, kamalaharris, borisjohnsonuk, and barackobama. Then, the comment sections selected were in the form of words, phrases, clauses, or sentences. The data obtained were also involved the Indonesian terminology which have the same function as in the English terminology. The result of the analysis has shown that the diction that are dominantly used were popular, abstract and slang words. By looking at the society, these dictions often used because it has some relations regarding to the event that have occurred in the past or the history of a country or place. This was done by using the theoretical framework by Gorys Kerraf (2009) about the types of diction. While the function of those three dictions is to address certain particular things in accordance to topics or the issues discussed. The functions of those frequently used dictions are to address social problems (popular words), to address domination and exploitation (abstract words), and to address description that are interpretative and explanatory (slang words). This was done by following and using Fairclough and Wodak‟s (1997) theoretical description about the eight key principles of Critical Discourse Analysis.
