Abstract

This thesis entitled "English Teacher Strategies in Teaching Vocabulary to EFL Young learners: A Case Study at 5th Graders of Nurul Islam Islamic Elementary School" is aimed to find out (1) the types of vocabulary that the teacher used in teaching vocabulary to young learners, (2) strategies employed by the teacher in teaching vocabulary, (3) Problems faced by teachers in teaching vocabulary. The data were gathered using observations, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using descriptive qualitative method. The results of this study showed that there were two types of vocabulary used namely passive and active vocabulary. The strategies used in teaching there three types of vocabulary were, visual, auditory, and kinesthetic strategies. Visual strategies used were realia and pictures; the auditory strategy was singing songs, and kinesthetic strategy was presented by role-playing games. In addition, the teacher also used memorization, definition, translation, and repetition. Meanwhile the problems faced by teachers in teaching vocabularies were teachers’ low motivation, students' lack of self-confidence, lack of vocabulary, boredom, and lack of media.
