Abstract

Language feature refers to the characteristic of language that people use in conversation. The purpose of this research is to investigate the language characteristics of male and female. It was chosen because the manner in which male and female utterances were revealed their linguistic characteristics. As a result, the study aimed to determine the types of language features used by Australian male and female on Youtube reaction videos, as well as the purpose of those features. Furthermore, the research was carried out using the descriptive qualitative method. The data was collected by identifying and categorizing Coates' seven types of language features. According to the results, there were only four types of features used by male‟s and five types by female. They are hedges, compliments, commands directives, questions, swear and taboo words. Other language features, such as tag questions and minimal responses, were not discovered. The purposes of the first feature Hedges are used to lessen the effect of an utterance due to politeness constraints between the speaker and the addressee. Questions are the second feature which designed to excite the viewer's interest and keep the conversation focused on the recipient. The third feature is command and directs, which are used to convince or engage the viewer in their reaction video. The fourth features is swearing and taboo word, that the use of a taboo word here is to express surprise of amazement. The final feature is compliments, which are used to express their admiration for another person's appearance.
