Abstract
The purpose of this research is to describe the English Vocabulary Learning Strategies (VLSs) and to discover the most frequent use strategies adopted by the students of the Natural Science (IPA) and Social Science (IPS) Program. In this study the researcher used both descriptive quantitative and qualitative method, in which the data were collected using survey questionnaire procedures and depth interview. The population of the study were 425 students from both the Natural Science (IPA) and Social Science (IPS) Program of eleventh-graders comprising eight classes of IPA and four classes of IPS Programs. The samples were taken from one class from IPA and one class from IPS. In all there were 42 students taken as samples. The findings showed that the most dominant types of strategies used by the Students of IPA Program were Metacognitive Strategy as shown in statement E1 (100%) and the least frequently used strategy was Cognitive Strategy in statement D1 (76.2%). On the other hand students of IPS Program mostly used Determination Strategy as shown in statement A1 (90.4%) and Social Strategy B1 (57.2%) as the least strategy employed. In addition, it was also found that IPA Program students used social strategy much more (81%) compared to IPS Program students (57.20%).
