Abstract

Metacognitive is one of the subcategories of learning strategy that consist of planning, monitoring, and evaluating. In the use of this strategy the students may have different opinions towards the use of strategies in their academic learning. Those opinions are said to be their attitude whether positive or negative. In this study, attitude is the tendency of students to act positively or negatively towards the use of metacognitive strategies in academic writing in terms of three components of attitude namely cognitive, affective, and behavioral. The present study aims to find out the students’ attitude towards metacognitive strategies. And it is also important to know how the students implement metacognitive strategies at the stage of planning, monitoring, and evaluating. The participants of this study are the IV- B academic writing class of English Education Department University of Mataram that consists of 26 students. All students participated in filling out the questionnaire given by the researcher. The researcher also took 6 students to be interviewed to support the results of the questionnaire. The findings showed that students have a positive attitude towards the use of metacognitive strategies in academic writing in terms of cognitive because they realized the importance of using metacognitive. In using metacognitive strategies students usually visualize and write whatever they have in their mind. After that, use their background knowledge to create the content of their writing. Then, look and think back on how they are writing to see sthe structure of their writing.
