Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify and describe the portrayal of Dr. Joshua Larabee as a successful teacher in “Akeelah and the Bee” movie. The purpose of this study is to find out how Dr. Larabee is portrayed as successful teacher in the movie. It is related to the roles of a good teacher, including the teaching methods and the teaching media used. This study belongs to the qualitative research. The data were collected from the primary data (“Akeelah and the Bee” movie, especially Dr. Larabee as the object of this research) and secondary data (the review of the movie). The results of this study showed Dr. Larabee fulfilled the criteria of good roles of teacher such as controller, organizer, assessor, prompter, resource, tutor and observer. Moreover, he utilized teaching media such as the direct method, the audio-lingual method and the Grammar-Translation Method. Furthermore, there were various teaching media used in the movie such as media based on ways of showing, ways of finding out, ways of listening, and media based on things, that is flashcards.
