Abstract

This research is aimed at identifying and describing the types of lexical meaning in Rowan Atkinson’s utterances and the most uttered lexical meaning based on Leech’s 7 types of meaning theory (1981). The methodology used in this research was qualitative descriptive. After collecting the data from the script of Rowan Atkinson’s shows, the researcher then grouped them into their own characteristics. The researcher found 23 utterances from 5 shows and classified them into 7 types of meaning, such as Conceptual meaning, Connotative meaning, Affective meaning, Reflected meaning, Social Meaning, Thematic meaning, and Collocative Meaning. From the theory used, the types of meaning that existed in Rowan Atkinson’s utterances were 5 out of 7 types based on Leech theory. Those were Conceptual meaning, Connotative meaning, Affective meaning, Reflected meaning, and Thematic meaning. Moreover, conceptual was the most uttered meaning in his shows. This meaning was included in 8 utterances out of 23 utterances, which have been calculated 35% of all Rowan’s shows.
